Health & Social Care

Please note that vocational qualifications are currently under review by the government. As such a decision about which specific Health & Social Care course will be confirmed in February 2022 once this review is complete. The two courses currently under consideration are BTEC Tech Award and OCR National. Information about both courses has been provided below.

Course Content

These courses give learners the opportunity to develop specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment related to health & social care. The main focus is on three areas: -

  • Skills and processes, such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health,  designing a plan to improve health and wellbeing
  • Attitudes, namely the care values that are vitally important in the sector, and the opportunity to practise applying them in a person-centred approach
  • Knowledge that underpins the effective use of skills, processes and attitudes, including human growth and development, understanding life events, health and social care services and factors affecting health and wellbeing.

These qualifications build on and use the knowledge and skills that are learned in your other subjects such as English, PE & science. It will complement future study in science or Psychology by allowing you to apply your knowledge and skills practically in a vocational context.

How are these courses assessed?

What are vocational courses?

BTECs & OCR Nationals are KS4 Level 2 vocationally related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. Additionally, they are popular and effective because they encourage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace. It is equivalent to 1 GCSE, and is accepted alongside other qualifications as entry to Sixth Form, college or apprenticeships.
