Key Stage 4 Options 2022
Welcome to our Key Stage 4 options launch
We are sorry that we are unable to invite you into school in person to hear this information. However here we aim to provide you with all the information you need here to help make an informed decision about the options available in Key Stage 4 at EWS. Here you can access everything you need on demand, hear from Miss Gilligan, our Deputy Headteacher in charge of curriculum about the options, process and stucture. You can also find out more from each of the courses that we offer from the subject teachers. You'll find the application form and a place to ask all those questions that you need answering to ensure that you make the right decision about the courses to follow in Key Stage 4.
Central to our approach is the need to put students at the heart of all decisions. We aim to ensure that every student achieves more than they thought possible. We set these aims alongside a need to ensure that students experience a broad and balanced curriculum which gives them the skills, knowledge and understanding to take confident next steps in- to further education, training or the world of work.
The KS4 curriculum at EWS is designed to provide choice for students to pursue areas of talent and enjoyment, whilst recognising that students require core qualifications for their next steps.
Good decision making requires information. Here we aim to inform parents and students about the KS4 curriculum so that they can choose options and courses that best suit their needs and abilities. If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact members of staff at school.

Welcome presentation by Miss Gilligan
The video below contains the opening presentation, overview, option blocks and advice for selecting options. The presentation is hosted by Miss Gilligan, Deputy Headteacher in charge of curriculum.
In an inperson event this presentation would be given at the start of the evening. We would advise watching this video first before exploring the other information provided.
Key Stage 4 programme of study
There are subjects which you must study as part of your Key Stage 4 programme of study, these are known as the 'Core' subjects:
Core subjects
- English Literature
- English Language
- Maths
- Science
- History or Geography
- Games
Option Subjects
Please see the option blocks below. In each object block you will see Geography or History. You are able to select four option subjects, one of these options must be either Geography or History, this leaves with you with three other subjects to choose from. Your option choices must be from different column.
So for example a student on North Campus could select:
Geography from Option A
Religious Studies from Option B
Design & Technology from Option C
French from Option D
A second student could select:
Music from Option A
History from Option B
Geography from Option C
Spanish from Option D
The pattern of these option blocks was generated by an inital survey sent to Year 9 students before the Christmas break. There is advice in Miss Gilligan's welcome presentation above about what to do if these option blocks do not match your first preference.
